THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Community Health started the post- graduate degree in Community Health leading to the Masters of Community Health, in the 1993/1994 academic session.

For this first batch, there were 20 candidates majoring in

The Masters of Community Health Program is being conducted in three semesters. During the first semester, all candidates are required to register for the compulsory courses. Elective courses are offered in all three semesters and candidates can register for them according to their majors and/or interest.

All 20 candidates successfully completed the Masters of Community Health Program in December 1994. Earlier, in the same year, another 24 candidates registered for the 1994/1995 academic session. The candidates are majoring in:

The Department of Community Health is also conducting the field work component of the Masters of Community Nutrition Program of the University of Queensland, Australia. Three candidates were supervised by the department in 1994.

Two candidates presently are enrolled in Masters of Medical Sciences (public health) under supervision of Prof. Dr. Osman Ali (Iskandar Zulkarnain Alias, Zaleha Md. Isa). Rozita Abd. Talib and Dr. Mohamed Ismail Abd. Samad started their Ph.D program this semester under supervision of Prof. Dr. Osman Ali.

Dr. Khadijah Shamsuddin was awarded the degree of Doctor of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health for her research thesis entitled; Risk factors of infant mortality in Peninsular Malaysia: evidence from the Malaysian Family Life Survey - 2.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hashami Bohari has completed his doctorate thesis and is currently correcting it prior to its defence.

FAMILY HEALTH REFERRAL CENTRE

Family Health Referral Centre (FHRC) was set-up in 1991. The objective is to provide comprehensive services for patients and their families. It is also involved with training of medical students and has a research potential. Throughout, the Family Health Referral Centre has also built good rapport with other supportive agencies.

In 1994, 220 UKM cases have been referred to the centre. The cases were from different disciplines; medical, surgical, psychiatric, paediatric, ophthal-

mology, gynaecology and obstetric cases. Services rendered include home visit, counselling, health education, referral to the appropriate agencies and even cash was given to the cases depending on their needs.
